Elon Musk’s X Gathers More User Data Train to AI Models

Elon Musk’s social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, intends to gather biometric data and work history from its users.

Highlights

  • X will collect biometric data and educational/work history.
  • The data will fuel machine learning and AI applications, as per the revised privacy policy.
  • Elon Musk guarantees that only publicly available data, not private messages or DMs, will be gathered.

September 2nd, 2023: Elon Musk’s company, formerly Twitter and now known as X, is expanding its data collection efforts, which now include biometric information.

Biometric data encompasses unique physical attributes, including but not limited to fingerprints and other distinct bodily characteristics.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security justifies this as being for “automated recognition.”

As for X’s motivation, the company has explicitly stated that the collected data will be employed for machine learning and artificial intelligence purposes, and this update has been incorporated into their online privacy policy.

The exact purpose may not be fully transparent, but X has indicated that it’s for “authentication and the operation of services.” Additionally, they intend to collect information about users’ educational and professional backgrounds.

Furthermore, X plans to leverage this data to provide job recommendations to users. This transition is scheduled to commence by the end of September.

Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and SpaceX, unveiled his new project called xAI in July, with the ambitious goal of “understanding reality.”

However, it’s worth noting that just a few weeks prior to this announcement, Musk and other prominent figures in the tech industry advocated for a pause in the growth of AI. They emphasized the importance of gaining a deeper understanding of AI before further development and deployment.

Privacy is a significant concern for many individuals, and Elon Musk appears to be aware of this.

He took to X, his social media platform, to assure users by stating, “Only publicly available data will be collected, not private messages or any confidential information.

So, X is collecting user data, but question is that. What will the data be used for? And how will it affect user privacy?
