Meta AI model: Meta’s Strategy to Develop an AI Model Beyond GPT-4 in 2024

Meta aims to regain its position in the competitive AI landscape with a new language model designed to surpass OpenAI’s GPT-4. Training is scheduled to commence in early 2024.

Key Points

  • Meta is currently in the process of creating a superior AI model, intended to outperform OpenAI’s GPT-4, with training set to begin in early 2024.
  • As part of this endeavor, Meta intends to transition from using Microsoft’s Azure platform to its own infrastructure for training the upcoming model.
  • In a notable move, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to participate in an AI forum alongside other prominent tech leaders, underscoring Meta’s renewed commitment to advancing AI technology.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is poised to make significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Recent reports indicate that Meta is actively working on the development of an AI model with the ambition of surpassing OpenAI’s GPT-4.

The upcoming model is expected to be completed by the following year, with training possibly commencing as soon as 2024.

This ambitious initiative aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision to reposition Meta at the forefront of AI innovation. Notably, Meta had introduced its previous AI system, Llama 2, just two months ago.

In contrast to Llama 2, which relied on Microsoft’s Azure cloud for computational power, Meta is planning to utilize its in-house resources for its latest AI project. The company is actively pursuing Nvidia’s H100s chips and establishing its own data centers to facilitate the training of the upcoming AI model.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this forthcoming AI system is designed to assist companies in high-level text analysis and provide various other services. This move reflects a growing trend, with an increasing number of businesses adopting AI to enhance their operations. Furthermore, the competition in this field is intensifying.

Notably, a recent report has disclosed that Apple is making substantial daily investments to enhance its AI model, known as Ajax.

Mark Zuckerberg appears to be enthusiastic about maintaining this new AI model as open-source, allowing other companies to utilize it for the development of their AI-powered tools. However, this approach comes with its own set of risks.

The Wall Street Journal has drawn attention to concerns regarding the potential misuse of copyrighted information and the dissemination of false information.

Interestingly, the revelation of Meta’s new project coincides with the announcement that Zuckerberg will be participating in an upcoming artificial intelligence forum.

This event, organized by US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, is set to include prominent figures from the tech industry. Among the notable participants are Tesla CEO Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

As of now, Meta has not provided any official comments regarding these recent developments. However, it is evident that Meta is making significant efforts to reestablish itself as a frontrunner in the AI sector, directly challenging competitors such as OpenAI, Apple, and Google.
